Special Delivery from the North Pole turns a plain sack into the one that appears under the tree on Christmas morning. The design is a badge, like a postal stamp: three lines of lettering with two small stars, inside a double border with rounded corners. The picture has it in red on a natural drawstring sack. The lettering is ordinary iron-on work. Give the border more care, because a straight frame shows any tilt and any wrinkle under it.
What you need
- Drawstring sack or large canvas tote natural cotton canvas or cotton drill, as in our picture
- Heat transfer vinyl (HTV), red one 12 x 12 in sheet for a design up to 11.5 in wide
- Cutting machine and mat a standard mat cuts a little under 12 in wide
- Weeding hook for the strip between the two border lines and the letter centers
- Heat press or iron you will press in sections on a big bag
- Large pressing pad or folded towel goes inside the bag
- Parchment paper and a ruler parchment to cover the design, ruler to square the frame

How to make it
- Measure the flat front of the sack below the casing where the cord runs. That channel is too thick to press over. Plan for the badge to fill about two thirds of the flat width.
- Set the size in your cutting software. The badge is nearly twice as wide as it is tall, and a standard mat allows up to 11.5 inches across. Keep the whole design together so the border and the words stay in register.
- Mirror the design and load the HTV with its carrier side on the mat. Cut with the iron-on setting for your vinyl.
- Weed in this order. Start with the waste outside the outer border. Next comes the long, thin strip between the two border lines. Pull it slowly so it does not drag a line with it. Then clear the field inside the frame, around the words and stars, and finish with the letter centers.
- Trim the carrier sheet to a neat rectangle, with its edges parallel to the border. Those straight edges make the next steps easier.
- Slide a pressing pad inside the sack and pre-press the front until it is flat and dry. Any crease left now will show as a kink in the frame.
- Lay the badge on the sack. Measure from the casing seam down to each top corner of the border and adjust until both numbers match. Then check the gaps to the left and right side seams.
- Cover with parchment. If the badge is wider than your iron or press plate, press it in overlapping sections, giving each one the full time and pressure from your vinyl maker’s heat guide.
- Peel the carrier slowly at the temperature the guide gives. Stop and press again if a border line starts to lift.
Tips
- Square the frame against a seam, not against the gathered top of the sack. The casing bunches when the cord is pulled, but the seam below it stays straight.
- The corners of the border sit at the outer edge of your press, where pressure is weakest. Give each corner a deliberate pass of its own.
- The small script line in the middle has the finest strokes in the design. If it looks hair-thin on screen at your size, scale the whole badge up.
- Keep a drawstring cord out from under the heat. Synthetic cord can melt or flatten.
FAQ
How big can the badge go on a large sack?
Up to 11.5 inches wide on a standard mat. On a 12 x 24 inch mat, turn the design a quarter turn and you can reach about 21 inches wide, cut from a roll of vinyl. Do not split the badge into pieces. A joined border is hard to line up.
Can a child’s name be added?
Yes. Type the name in your cutting software in a bold, simple font and place it under the badge, outside the frame. Mirror it with the rest of the mat. Cutting the name in a second color makes it stand out.
How should the sack be stored between Christmases?
Wash it only if it needs it, inside out in cool water, and let it air dry. Fold it with the badge facing out or roll it loosely, so the vinyl is not creased sharply for eleven months.
