How we make our files

You should know how the files, pictures and articles on this site are made. This is the whole process.

The cut files

Our designs are typeset by our own software. It sets each phrase in an open-licence font, lays out the words and exports the result as an SVG cut file and a transparent PNG. No AI image model is involved in the cut files.

Open-licence fonts are fonts whose licence allows anyone to use them, including in designs that are given away. Each project page names the font its design is set in.

The pictures

There are two kinds of picture on this site, and neither is a photo of an item we made.

  • Flat illustrations. The flat pictures of shirts, mugs, signs and other items are drawn by the same software that makes the cut files. They show where the design sits on the item.
  • Photo-style pictures. Some projects also have a picture that looks like a photograph. These are generated with an AI image model, starting from our design. They are illustrations of what the finished project can look like. Where one is the main picture of a project, the caption under it says so.

Because an AI model draws the photo-style pictures, small details in them can differ from the cut file. The cut file preview on each project page shows exactly what is in the file.

The articles

Our articles are drafted with AI assistance and checked against the cut file before they are published. We have not made every project ourselves, and we do not write as if we had.

That shapes what we will and will not write:

  • We do not write made-up personal stories or invent an author.
  • We do not say we tested a product or a method when we did not.
  • We do not publish fake reviews or fake deadlines.
  • We do not give machine settings such as pressure, blade depth or heat-press time and temperature. Use the material setting in your machine's software, such as Design Space, and the heat guide from the maker of your vinyl or blank.

If something is wrong

If a file does not open, a design does not cut cleanly or a step in a project is unclear, tell us at hello@cozycutfiles.com and we will look into it.
