Gobble Til You Wobble is the shirt for the person who goes back for thirds. Wear it to Thanksgiving dinner or a turkey trot. Our picture shows cream vinyl on a rust tee. You make it like any iron-on shirt, but allow extra time for weeding. This phrase is full of closed letters, and every one has a center to pick out.

How to make it

  1. Pre-wash the shirt and dry it fully. Skip fabric softener, which leaves a coating that vinyl does not like.
  2. Open the SVG in your cutting software. Size it to about 9 to 11 inches wide for an adult shirt and 7 to 9 inches for youth sizes. Hold a ruler against the shirt to see how that width looks.
  3. Mirror the design before sending it to the machine.
  4. Put the HTV on the mat with the glossy carrier facing down. Select the iron-on material that matches your vinyl and cut.
  5. Peel off the background vinyl. Then go letter by letter. The two big words are all capitals. Each O has one center and each B has two, which makes ten before you reach the small script line and the two stars beside it. Count them as you go. One forgotten center shows up clearly on a finished shirt.
  6. Warm the shirt under the press or iron for a moment to smooth it and remove moisture.
  7. Center the design about 3 inches below the collar. Step back and look from above before you press. The top word is arched, so judge level by the bottom word, which runs straight.
  8. Cover it with parchment and press firmly, using the settings in your vinyl maker’s heat guide. Remove the carrier at the peel temperature the guide gives.

Tips

  • Cream vinyl on a rust shirt gives a warm fall look. On mustard or another pale shirt, switch to brown.
  • Hold the weeded design up to a window before pressing. Light passes through every spot where the vinyl is gone, so a missed center stands out.
  • For a whole table of shirts, cut all the adult sizes first, then resize once for the kids. It saves switching back and forth.
  • Heather and tri-blend shirts can scorch more easily than plain cotton. Check that your vinyl’s guide covers blends.

FAQ

Do we need a heat press, or will an iron do?

An iron is enough for a few shirts. Turn the steam off and work on a firm, heat-safe surface such as a table with a towel on it. Press down hard in one spot at a time instead of sliding the iron around. A heat press is faster and more even if you plan to make a lot.

What size works for a toddler shirt?

Start around 5 to 6 inches wide, then check against the actual shirt. This phrase has small letters at that size, so weed patiently and consider a simple smooth vinyl over a textured one.

How do we keep the vinyl from peeling after Thanksgiving?

Most peeling comes from too little pressure or washing too soon. Press firmly, wait at least 24 hours, and wash the shirt inside out in cool water. Dry it on low heat. Stored flat, it should be ready for next November too.
